The pilgrimage trail in Zaplaz originated in the early 19th century, and the first church was built in 1848. Franz Kurz zum Thurn und Goldenstein painted its presbytery with scenes from the life of Mary. He also painted Mary Our Help, which stands today in the left altar. The current church was built in 1926, when the two bell towers were finished, a beautiful addition to the church clad in the neo-Renaissance forms. In the immediate vicinity is Mary's Spring (Marijin studenec), called the "Charmed Spring" by the locals who believe its water has healing powers. |

The Baroque pilgrimage church of sv. Frančišek Ksaverij was build between 1723 and 1735. Its foundation is an irregular octagon with a square presbytery, side chapels, and diagonally positioned bell towers, and four domes mark its silhouette. The most renowned artists of the time participated in the decoration of the church: the painters Valentin Metzinger and Fortunat Bergant, the fresco painter Anton Tušek, and the Novo mesto workshop of gilded altars. |
