Kostanjevica na Krki is one of the smallest and oldest cities in Slovenia and has a rich tourist offer. The old city core comprising two parallel streets was built on the island in the Krka river near Spanheim's march stronghold. Due to frequent flooding, the name "Dolenjska Venice" stuck to the city, which in 2002 celebrated its 750th anniversary of first being mentioned in written sources.

Only a kilometer from Kostanjevica na Krki stands the former Cistercian monastery, founded in 1234, which today houses the Božidar Jakac Gallery with a permanent collection of Slovene Expressionists and periodic exhibitions in the monastery church, the lapidarium, and the Lamut Fine Arts Salon. In the surrounding park, works created during international Forma Viva sculpture symposiums are on display. |
