Strata of cretaceous limestone embrace Bela krajina's largest spring, a home of the Proteus anguinus cave salamander and the only known habitat of the subterranean bivalve mollusk Congeria kusceri in Slovenia. The Krupa River with its protected area was proclaimed a natural monument in 1997. Here is the beginning of the beautiful Karst Education Trail running from Lebica to the Krupa that shows visitors the interesting sites of the karst world in the most direct and effective way.

Metlika's ancient city core boasts three picturesque squares. In Metlika Castle, the Bela krajina Museum presents the Bela krajina area from prehistoric times to the middle of the 20th century. Because the first volunteer fire brigade was founded here in 1869, Metlika also hosts the Slovene Firefighting Museum. The castle courtyard is enlivened in May by the Vinska vigred ("Wine Spring") festivities and in summer by the "Pridi zvečer na grad" ("Come to the castle tonight") cultural events.
