Stična - izvir Krke - Žužemberk - Dvor - Soteska
- Hudičev turn
Arrival in Stična and sightseeing of Cistercian Monastery
and Slovene Religious Museum which houses the oldest
Latin manuscript in Slovenia - Stiški rokopisi. View
the triple-naved basilica Church of the Holy Mother
of Sorrows, the Gothic cloister, and other architectural
features of the monastery. In the gift shop we can buy
some medicinal herbs prepared according to the recipes
of the monks. Next stop will be by the source of Krka
River in cave Krška jama. In the past the cave was used
as a hiding place from the Turks; today it is open to
the public. Continuing the route, follow the Krka River
through the valley, in which the river has cut a deep
gorge and flows over calc-tufa cascades. Short stop
in Žužemberk and sightseeing of the ancient castle ruins.
Lunch, then visit to church of St. Mohor and Fortunat.
Continue through the river valley past Dvor, where we
near the Auersperg iron foundry, which produced the
materials used in making machines and bridges (e.g.
the former Cobbler's Bridge in Ljubljana). The blast
furnace, the only remnant of the foundry, is protected
as a technological monument. Very soon we come to Soteska
and the ruins of a former castle. The former glory of
the castle park is recalled only by the garden pavilion,
called "Hudičev turn", with the paintings
by the 17th century master Almanach. We'll end our day
adventure by visiting the one and only island castle
in Slovenia - Otočec. The countess will welcome you,
give you the tour of the island, show you the castle
and tell you all about its history.
