1st day: LJUBLJANA
Arrival to Ljubljana. Walking through the old part of
the town. Among others there are many masterpieces of
well known Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. Walk over
the Three bridges to the Market and the Cathedral, to
the Town hall, across the Shoemakers' bridge to Kongresni
trg... After lunch in a typical Slovene restaurant visit
the castle that dominates the Slovene capital. Enjoy
a view over the city and the surroundings. Afterwards
you'll be free to visit a museum before we take you
to the hotel, where you'll be served dinner.
2nd day: BLED, ŠKOFJA LOKA
After breakfast drive to Bled. We'll visit the castle
(museum, chapel) that is situated on a steep cliff over
the lake. You'll enjoy an unforgettable view of the
lake and region of Gorenjska. After coming from the
castle, you'll be offered the possibility to go to the
island by boat and ring the wishing bell. Lunch and
then drive to Škofja loka, town that is considered to
be a cultural monument. Since 1511 its outlook hasn't
changed much and therefore it is the best-preserved
mediaeval Slovene town. Dinner.
3rd day: ŠKOCJANSKE JAME, KOPER, PIRAN
Breakfast and drive to the Slovene coast. Our first
stop will be at the great caves of Škocjanske jame,
which are included in UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Drive to Koper, visit to the old town. After lunch we'll
stop in a wine cellar, where they keep one of the biggest
wooden barrels in Europe. We will also try some of the
wines. In the afternoon we'll take a boat trip along
our short but interesting coast. Dinner.
4th day: STIČNA-DOLINA GRADOV-OTOČEC
After breakfast drive to Stična and visit to the Cistercian
monastery. Visit to the basilica Sad Mother of God.
In the shop you can buy herbal teas and other cures
of well-known father Simon Ašič. Next stop will be in
Žužemberk, which hosts one of the mightiest Slovenian
castles, sited above the Krka River. We'll get close
to the river and be able to admire unique calc-tufa
cascades. After lunch visit to the church of St.Mohor
and Fortunat. Continue through the river valley to Dvor
to see the Auersperg iron foundry, which produced the
materials used for making machines and bridges. Next
stop will be in Soteska where nowadays only ruins remind
us of the once glorious castle. The former glory of
the castle park is recalled by the garden pavilion,
called "Hudičev turn", with the paintings
by the 17th century master Almanach. We'll end our day
adventure by visiting the one and only island castle
in Slovenia - Otočec. The countess will welcome us,
show us the castle and tell us all about its history.
Dinner.
5th day: NOVO MESTO-PLETERJE-KOSTANJEVICA NA KRKI
After breakfast visit of Novo mesto. We'll see the Chapter
Church of St. Nicholas and stop at the Dolenjska Museum
with its rich archeological collections. Walk to the
Main Square, as reflected by the arcaded shops and houses.
From Novo mesto well drive to Šentjernej, stop at the
tourist farm for lunch, and then continue to Pleterje.
Visit to the Cartusian Monastery founded in the 15th
century. We will view multimedia presentation about
the life and work of the monks. Stop at the outdoor
Museum of Folk Architecture - 200 years old buildings
from the area of Šentjernej. Last stop for the day will
be in Kostanjevica, which has an idyllic location on
an island in the midst of the Krka River. Visit to the
former monastery which houses an extensive collection
of works by contemporary Slovenian artists as well as
works by old masters from the Carthusian monastery at
Pleterje. See the collection Forma viva in wood, a permanent
outdoor sculpture park, regarded as one of the most
beautiful collections of contemporary wood sculptures
in south-eastern Europe. See the Kostanjevica cave.
Dinner.
6th day: CELJE-PTUJSKA GORA-PTUJ
After breakfast drive to Celje and visit to Gornji grad
where we'll be introduced to the history of one of the
most important European families in mediaeval times
- the counts of Celje. Next stop will be at the gothic
Church of St.Mary on the hill Ptujska gora. The church
is considered to be the most precious art monument in
Slovenia. Then we drive to Ptuj and stop at the typical
"gostilna" for lunch. Tour of the town that
is known as town monument embraced by Drava River and
Castle hill. On the hill stands one of the largest Slovene
castles in Slovenia with beautiful rooms and old furniture,
and also different collections. Return to hotel and
dinner.
7th day; BELA KRAJINA
After breakfast we will go to Bela krajina. Our first
stop will be in Rožanc, at the Mithreum - ancient shrine
to the Persian god Mithras, whose image is carved in
stone. From Rožanec drive to Črnomelj, the centre of
Bela krajina, and on to a village called Veliki Nerajec.
This village received the European award for the development
of the countryside and village renewal. People from
the village will show us a 200 year-old house and offer
us home made specialty - buckwheat rolled cake. After
lunch in Dragatu{ we will drive to Adlešiči where we
will be introduced to the art of spinning and weaving,
and decorating eggs. We'll also have an opportunity
to meet a real beekeeper. Our next stop is the nearby
village of Rosalnice with the famous Three Churches.
These three gothic churches, which stand side by side,
were built in the 15th century. Before leaving this
region we will visit a Bela krajina Museum and wine
cellar to try some of their wines. Our tour will end
with the farewell dinner and a party at the tourist
farm, also possible to visit a small private wine cellar,
taste wines, and enjoy folk music from a male quartet.
8th day: FAREWELL TO SLOVENIA
After breakfast return home.
