| Stari trg at
Kolpa |
 |
The village of Stari trg at Kolpa has a precarious
position above the wooded gorge of the River Kolpa. On a spur
is the lovely cream coloured church, with fine views of the
gorge and, inside, a stunning Baroque altar piece. A winding
road runs down to Prelesje and the river, which in the summer
is warm and welcoming. It's a beautiful place to stop for
a while and hire cycles, boats or canoes; swim or fish in
the river; camp under orchard trees; or stay in small guest
houses.
Rosalnice has been a place of pilgrimage
since the Templars built a church here in the middle of the
12th century. These three small churches known as "The
three parishes", Gothic in origin and Baroque in style,
now provide magical settings for summer concerts.

At Lahinja Landscape Park, which
is largely managed as a nature reserve, there are exceptional
flower meadows, copses and marshes, and hosts of colourful
dragon and damsel flies. You might also see kingfisher or
oriole. Here you will find the little church of Pusti Gradac
and next to it, in an idyllic setting, a water powered flour-mill
and saw-mill, both still working and open to visitors. The
village Veliki Nerajec has a tourist information centre where
you should ask about local guides, cart rides through the
park, the gudalo and potica.

Entering the old town of Črnomelj
through the Medieval gateway, you appreciate its strategic
position between bends of the Lahinja and Doblicica rivers
and see evidence of the long history of this frontier region.
On the river bank are prehistoric settlements and Roman graveyards.
The Turks repeatedly attacked but never succeeded in capturing
the town. At the heart of Bela krajina's folk culture, its
colourful Jurjevanje Festival in June attracts singers and
dancers from throughout the region.
