Dolenjska and Bela krajina fall
within the Sava wine-gowing region, one of three such regions
in Slovenia. The limestone soils and sub-Alpine climate combine
happily here to permit the growing mostly red grape varieties.
From these come light and fresh rose wines; red wines, such
as the local speciality Cviček; and white wines of high quality,
including some late vintage and ice wines. You may want to
follow on of the recently created wine routes, which take
you through the most attractive of the vineyards areas, including
those on the steep south-facing slopes above Semič; in the
countryside near Metlika with its great wine making co-operative;
and on the hills east of Novo mesto as well as Trebnje surroundings.
Here, and in restaurants enroute,
you will have the opportunity to taste, drink, and to buy
fine wines which because they are produced in small quantities
are rarely found elsewhere.
