The Franja Partisan Hospital, a genuine
symbol of humanity and comradeship, is hidden among the rocks,
trees, and rapids of the Cerkljansko forest. From December
1943 until the end of World War II, it provided medical care
for more than 900 wounded soldiers. It had its own power plant,
x-ray machine, operating theatres, workshops, laundry, rehabilitation
center, and many smaller sections. The Partisans successfully
defended the area against two assaults, so the hospital was
never discovered by the enemy.

Above the old part of Idrija rises a
Renaissance beauty: Gewerkenegg Castle, the former administrative
center of Idrija's mercury mine. Today, this renovated 16th-century
castle houses rich exhibitions presenting the five-hundred-year
long history of the mine and the city, interesting geological
and cartographical exhibitions, a display of bobbin lace,
and a reconstruction of the writer France Bevk's study. The
picturesque arcaded courtyard, luxuriously decorated with
frescoes of plants, is the setting for numerous summer cultural
events.
