The water drains from it twice a year. The most beautiful view of the lake is from Mount Slivnica, famous as a gathering place of witches as described by the Slovene polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor in his encyclopedic The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (1689). Today, it is at least equally popular among mountaineers, paragliders, hang-gliders, and ham radio enthusiasts.

The Cerknica encampment ("tabor") is unique because of its size, shape, and good state of preservation. Also worth visiting are the birth house of the musician and composer Fran Gerbič, the library, and the Cerknica Lake Museum. Cerknica is especially lively during the Carnival period when witches, devils, and other creatures from the mythology of Cerknica parade through the streets.
