There is no shortage of folk heritage and festivals
in our region. Urban and rural communities punctuate their lives
with colourful festivals, traditional celebrations, and numerous
small examples of living heritage and folklore. Saints' days are
marked not only by special masses but also with cultural and folkloric
festivals such as that of the Assumption in Nova Štifta and Kostel
in August. Among the numerous annual festivals are Osilnica's "Petruvo"
in June; the fair of wooden ware and pottery in Ribnica at the beginning
of September; the "Pust" Carnival in Dobrepolje and Cerkno
in February; and the Mask Carnival in Cerknica and Ribnica. The
Cerkno Museum has a magnificent collection of "Pust" masks
and costumes. Legends are associated with St. Barbara in Loški Potok
and Idrija, with the waterfall near Kostel, a giant in the Ribnica
valley, and of the witches of Slivnica.
