Gewerkenegg Castle
Built between 1522 and 1533 by the Society of
Mining Entrepreneurs, the Renaissance castle served as the headquarters
of the mine administration until the 20th century, never serving
the more traditional role of such castles as the seat of feudal
lords. Dominating the old town, the castle's imposing exterior hides
abundant treasures, not least of which is the fine 18th century
arcaded courtyard, embellished by exquisite foliage frescoes. The
castle is now home to the Idrijski Muzej, named European Museum
of the Year in 1997 for industrial archaeology. On three floors
of bright and airy exhibition halls, the museum invites you to discover
Idrija's rich and varied heritage. Well-displayed exhibits show
a wealth of collections relating to geology, cartography, folklore
and of course an illuminating history of mining and its social importance.
There is also a reconstruction of Bevk's study, and the story of
Idrija's other famous product bobbin lace. For more than 300 years,
this delicate domestic craft has played a central role in Idrijan
life, as nimble fingers have created works of art and exquisite
beauty. Idrija is still the centre of lace-making in Slovenia.
