Slivnica, Cerknica Lake, Rakov Škocjan
Known locally as the Witches' Hill, Slivnica is
the perfect spot from which to soak up the views over Cerknica lake
and gain your bearings. Witches and other legendary characters feature
at the traditional "Pust" Carnival in Cerknica heralding
spring. The ideal way to explore the plain is on foot, bicycle or
horseback, affording many opportunities to watch the many species
of birds attracted by the intermittent waters of Cerkniško Jezero.
The lakeside villages have many fine houses and farm buildings,
with an old granary in Žirovnica, and an especially fine row of
drying racks at the edge of Cerknica. The old borough of Cerknica
is built around ancient strongholds against the Turks and offers
much of interest to the visitor. A short walk from Cerknica is the
village of Dolenje Jezero where the intermittent waters of the lake
are represented by a model.
The unique beauty and natural drama in the karst landscape may be
readily explored along the trail at Rakov Škocjan.
