Retje, Hrib - Loški potok
This cluster of villages in a narrow valley centres
on Hrib Loški Potok. As you go towards Retje, you will see the
patterns of narrow traditional fields leading towards the forest
from the valley floor.
Valvasor mentions three churches in Loški Potok during the 1680's,
all of which exist today in fact there are now six churches and
chapels, each with its own unique features. There is the fortified
tower of St. Barbara's, with its open style more usual in the coastal
area of Primorska; frescoes by Anton Postl in the 18th century octagonal
Church of St. Florian; and a neo-baroque altar piece by Matija Ozbič
in St. Leonard's. Retje retains an astonishing number of old buildings
including a granary, hayrack, smithy and workers' cottages on the
slopes, some of which are now restored. A Roman road is thought
to have passed through the valley, and there is a well-preserved
Roman bridge at nearby Črni Potok.
