H12 - OVER THE PLAIN ACROSS THE KRKA RIVER

 

Šentjernej - Drama - Dobruška vas - Škocjan - Zagrad - Zbure - Šmarjeta - Šmarješke Toplice

Trail length:  23.7 km.

The route runs along the lowest-lying settled area. We will pass the Medieval Gutenwerth island and home of the beaver at the estuary of the Radulja into the Krka River and arrive in  Knoblehar’s town of Škocjan. We recommend a stop at Zagrad Park.

SCHEMATIC MAP

 From Šentjernej we will set off towards Kostanjevica. At the sports park of the primary school we will turn left and continue along the agricultural path to Roje and Drama. Here we will visit the remnants of Gutenwerth and the Church of St. Nicholas, and then continue onwards to Dobrava pri Škocanju. We can take a break here and walk to the estuary of the Radulja into the Krka River. We will continue  and cross the motorway overpass and walk through Dobruška vas. Before arriving at Škocjan we can turn into the the village Zavinek, especially renowned for its Christmas-decorated village. 

In Škocjan we can rest and view the double-arched bridge, the birth house of Ignacij Knoblehar, Church of St. Kancijan and the old Metelkovina school, and then continue our hike towards Zbure. We will walk along the bends of the Radulja River to the macadam path which joins the road from the right side. We will turn onto the road, cross the Radulja River and continue onwards towards Zagrad. Here we can visit the Prijateljev Homestead and stroll along the Zagraški log valley, afterwards turning left onto the agricultural path to theChurch of St. Thomas. We will then descend to Velike Poljane and Zbure, where we will turn right towards Klevevž. We will walk among the orchards and arrive at Radovlje where we will turn right onto the regional road leading to Šmarjeta. Here we can visit the Church of St. Marjeta and the Karlovšek Memorial Room, thereafter continuing our hike to Šmarješke Toplice.
