H16 - FOLLOWING THE VESTIGES OF KARSTIC TEMENICA

 

TTrebnje - Gornje Ponikve - Sv. Ana - Zijalo - Luknja - Novo mesto
 

Trail length: 29.7 km.
 

You will follow the surface and underground current of the Temnica underground stream along this route. Its karstic sources Zijala and Luknja are especially interesting. The trail is particularly beautiful during periods of high water where we can observe the extended riverbeds at Ponikva and Jablana.

Most suitable time to visit: warm half of the year

SCHEMATIC MAP

Following a visit to Trebnje we will set off over the overpass spanning the railway tracks and the Novo mesto-Ljubljana main road to the Trebnje Castle. We will turn left towards Odrga and Poboršt behind the castle. During our walk across the main road we can view the Temenica riverbank and flood beds. We will turn left in Podboršt, cross the road, Temenica and railway tracks at turn right onto the Trebnje-Mirna Peč local road at the Trimo plant. In Gorenje Ponikve right before the bridge spanning the Temnica River, we will turn left onto an agricultural path and follow beside the left bank of the river to Breg and the cemetery at the Church of St. Marjeta. At the branch in the village Grm, we will turn off onto an agricultural path which will bring us to the sinkholes of the Temenica River. We will continue along the path into the forest, cross the dry fossiliferous Temenica riverbank and continue towards the west to the overpass spanning the railway tracks and onto the Ponikve-Mirna Peč road. This will be followed by an ascent to Gradišča to the  Church of St. Anne, which affords a beautiful view of the nearby surroundings. We will return to the local road and descend to Zijala. From Zijala we will continue past the mill and Vrhpeč towards Mirna Peč. At Ivanja vas we can either turn towards Mirna Peč where we can spend the night or continue along the Temenica River to the Temenic sinkholes by Goriška vas. Here we will turn right towards Vrhovo by Mirna Peč and then walk through the forest to Luknja. We will ascend above the source to the ruins of Luknja Castle and then continue on the macadam path to Prečna. Here we will turn left towards Novo mesto.
