Trail to Base 20

Base 20 was the main base of the Central Committee of the Slovenian Communist Party and the excutive committee of the Liberation Front in Kočevjski Rog during the Second World War from 1942 to 1944. The location for the base was chosen by Dr. Pavel Lunaček and Dr. Darijan Brecelj due to its difficult access.

SCHEMATIC MAP

Although the first permanent hut was not constructed until April 1943, the base had already been operating during the Italian offensive in 1942. At the end of 1943, Base 20 comprised a complex of 26 barracks with around 140 combatants and politicians housed there. During the war, quite a few renowned people lodged there, among them Edvard Kocbek, Boris Kidrič and others. The base’s location remained hidden until the end of the war. Nevertheless the command was relocated to Črnomelj in 1944.
