SCHEMATIC MAP
We begin the trip in
the town of Ribnica. We can also opt for a tour of the town Ribnica
and its castle, the Miklova House museum and Church of St. Stephen.
Numerous culinary offers are available here. You are especially
invited to Ribnica during the Ribnica Fair of Woodenware and Pottery
held the first Sunday of each September.
We will then continue
past the village Hrovača where the Škrabčev Homestead is located. The
villagers hold various ethological and tourist events here throughout
the year with Bean Day among the most famous, held the second Saturday
of each September.
Our hike will then continue over the Dolenje vas plain through the
villages of Otavica and Lipovec. We will stop in Lipovec and view
Ribnica woodenware craft articles marked with their geographical
origin. We will then walk along the edge of the forest to Jasnica.
Here our ascent to
Stojna mountain begins. The trail is marked with the characteristic
yellow-green signposts and Knafel markings. At the Jasnica motel, we
will cross the road and turn southwards at the bust top athrough the
meadow into the hill and cross to the path leading to the top of four
forest roads and arrive on Slovenski vrh (1040 m).
From the peak, we will
descend southwards, cross the forest road and arrive on a less-maintained
forest road which we will follow and then turn left along a tractor
track to the other forest road. We will walk along the road to two old
fir trees on the left (there are 3 forest cottages called bivaks in
the valley on the right) and then hike along the hill slope on the
right south-eastwards and later, southwards. We will arrive at a
forest road and walk along it on the right to the turnaround area at
the end of the road and then onwards along the bike trail and along
the steep hill trail. We will soon arrive at the top of Ledenik (1068
m), the highest peak of the Stojna mountain. When the trees are bare,
one can see the Snežnik mountain in Notranjska from Ledenik to the
west. Ledenik does not have any lookout points.
We will descend along
the steep curved trail to the left and to the bike trail and then
continue along it and turn left onto the forest road, continuing past
two forks in the road, taking a left at each fork and then turning
right at the third fork and following the signposts and visit the
Elenor Cave bearing witness to the karstic world and prehistoric
Strmec one of the Kočevje primeval forests.
We will then return to
our original trail. We will cross the road bend and go right onto the
forest trail, first walking downwards and later, upwards and we will
again arrive on the forest road. Here we will go right (the Mostna
Cave is located alongside the road on the left) and then left at the
crossroads (signpost) to the road block and continue downards to Koča
by the Jelenov spring. The lodge is located in the middle of a pine
forest and is managed by the Kočevje Alpine Society. Benches are
situated around the area for weary travellers. Nearby, the murmur of
the Jelenov spring can be heard. Here we can rest partaking of home-made
delicacies prior to commencing the all-day ride. A walk towards the
south will bring us to an ice cave which once served as a natural
refrigerator.
If we decided not to
sleep over in the shelter of the mountain lodge, we can descend along
the so-called Kalan trail to Kočevje and select an overnight
accomodation, restaurant or inn. If we still have the energy, we can
tour some of the other sights of Kočevje, such as the old town centre
with the Church of St. Jernej, the Provincial Museum or the mining
lake.
